The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments located in the knee responsible for connecting bones to one another. It is susceptible to injury, particularly when playing sports such as basketball, tennis, soccer, or gymnastics that typically involve a sudden change in direction, stopping suddenly, or a bad landing from an improper jump. When the ACL is torn, it will often require undergoing ACL reconstruction to repair.

In an ACL reconstruction procedure, doctors will remove the torn ligament and then use a tendon piece from another part of the knee to replace it. Doctors may also use a donor tendon. This procedure is considered outpatient and is performed by an orthopedic surgeon by focusing on the knee joint where several small incisions are made.

Dr. Alwin Almeida at Health City Cayman Islands is the facility’s Chief Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in ACL reconstruction. He also oversees the facility’s sports injury clinic and has performed thousands of arthroscopic procedures and joint replacements on international patients during his 10+ year career. As an orthopedist, Dr. Almeida is passionate about all things involving arthroscopy and joint replacement and he has even published several papers based on his own research.
