If you’re experiencing symptoms such as pain in the neck, weakness, or numbness, it may be an indicator of an underlying issue in the cervical area of the spine, such as degenerative disc disease or cervical deformities. A neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon may recommend undergoing cervical spine surgery in order to treat the condition. Cervical spondylosis, for example, is a common term used to describe the general wear and tear the spine and its discs will experience as a person ages.

Depending on the type of condition, a surgeon may fuse the vertebrae (bones) of the spine together using a bone graft. These grafts usually consist of either an autograft or an allograft where the bones are taken from another part of the body or received from a donor, respectively. In other cases, the surgeon will replace a cervical disc to allow the neck to move freely while ensuring the spine remains stabilized. Cervical surgery continues to move towards minimally invasive surgery techniques which do not involve long incisions and can considerably cut down on recovery time while providing potentially better international patient outcomes.

Dr. Susheel Wadhwa at Health City Cayman Islands remains steadfast in his mission to research and perfect techniques for improving cervical surgery using minimally invasive techniques. He has performed hundreds of surgeries on the spine as well as the brain independently and he has also contributed his knowledge and skills to thousands of complex surgeries since 2007. Dr. Susheel is currently a consultant in the Department of Neurosurgery.
