Rare Heart Procedure Offers New Hope for Heart Patients Dr. Ravi Kishore Amancharla
Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI) broke ground back in 2017 when it made history by becoming the first healthcare facility in the English speaking Caribbean to spearhead a cutting-edge procedure for patients that are dealing with irregular heartbeat, also known as atrial fibrillation. The condition may result in shortness of breath or even stroke.
The HCCI procedure is called cryoablation and it involves the use of a “cryoballoon” which is inserted in a deflated state as a catheter. A liquid is inserted into the balloon which causes it to cool, dilate, and then freeze any structure in which it is placed. When threaded to the pulmonary veins behind the heart, the inflated balloon freezes the vein for about two minutes, causing the source of the fibrillation to be destroyed. The procedure takes about sixty to ninety minutes. When it was introduced, HCCI reported that they had performed the procedure on five patients, all of whom were able to be discharged from the facility in just a day.
