Innovative Surgery Saves National Rugby Player’s Shoulder
Last year, Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI) continued its streak of healthcare breakthroughs. This time around, it was the orthopedic surgical team spearheaded by Dr. Alwin Almeida which made history in the Americas by repairing the shoulder of national rugby player Edward Westin after it had become dislocated multiple times. The frequent dislocation was so severe due to socket bone loss, the shoulder would dislocate even during sleep.
Using minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery called Latarjet, Dr. Almeida and his team used a technique that was not yet available in the United States or Canada. Also known as Latarjet-Bristow, the surgery is highly complex, and only a few surgeons in the world have received the extensive training necessary to properly perform the intricate procedure. It involves using surgical techniques as well as implants.
After previous dislocation surgery proved unsuccessful, Westin was reluctant to try the surgery again but changed his mind after speaking with Dr. Almeida. After a successful surgery, Westin is considering returning to the sport he is passionate about.
