Knee Replacement Surgery for International Patients
Also known as arthroplasty, knee replacement is a surgical procedure intended to “resurface” the knee due to the effects of arthritis while focusing on relieving pain. Plastic and metal components are utilized to cap the knee joint bones as well as the kneecap itself. This procedure is often performed on patients that have significant arthritis or have suffered a severe injury to the knee.
The knee joint may be affected by a multitude of arthritis types. Osteoarthritis, for example, is a common degenerative joint disease where the joint cartilage breaks down. It is known to affect adults in their middle age or older. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, involves an inflammation of what’s called the synovial membrane, a tissue that lines the joint. The inflammation may result in an excess of synovial fluid (a joint lubricator) which can lead to pain or stiffness.
Dr. Alwin Almeida at Health City Cayman Islands is the facility’s Chief Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in joint replacement. He also oversees the facility’s sports injury clinic and has performed thousands of arthroscopic procedures and joint replacements on international patients during his 10+ year career. As an orthopedist, Dr. Almeida is passionate about all things involving arthroscopy and joint replacement and he has even published several papers based on his own research.
